Codex: Orks, and August’s rules updates

Every Ork points value and detachment has moved, and a change to how units disembark affects every army in the game.

Orks: a new codex, and a rebuilt army

Games Workshop published Ork points ahead of the codex reaching shelves, and it is not a tweak — 47 units were repriced and the entire detachment list was replaced. If you have an Ork list saved, it is almost certainly no longer the points total it says.

The biggest points moves

UnitWasNow
Ghazghkull Thraka235300
Morkanaut270345
Gorkanaut255325
Stompa600700
Flash Gitz (5)75105
Boyz (10)7590
Meganobz (3)90110
Mozrog Skragbad125170
Painboy9045
Zodgrod Wortsnagga8050
Bannernob5035
Mek5545

Plus 35 more, and several units now cost more for your third or fourth copy where they did not before. Ghazghkull is also a single model now rather than a two-model entry.

All 15 detachments replaced

Seven are new: Brute Bosses, Flyboyz, Madcap Meks, Runt Swarm, Shoota Boyz, Wreckas and Wurrband. The eight that kept their names were rebuilt underneath — most dropped to 1 Detachment Point, four changed Force Disposition, and every one got a new set of enhancements. Blitz Brigade, for instance, no longer offers Blitzkaptin or Tuff Git; it has Boss Boomer and Targetin’ Gizmos at 10 points each.

Five detachments are simply gone — More Dakka!, Freebooter Krew, Speedwaaagh!, Rollin’ Deff and Equatorial Hordes. The app has stopped offering them.

Six datasheets rebuilt

Games Workshop published six Ork datasheets in full ahead of the codex, and every one of them had changed. Those six are now correct in the app:

UnitWhat changed
Ghazghkull ThrakaOne model now, not two — Makari is an ability rather than a model. M 8″, T 10, W 16, a new Adamantine ’Eadbutt, and he is a Lone Operative near your Orks Infantry rather than a Leader who joins them. Da Boss gives you an extra Command Point a turn while he is your Warlord on the battlefield.
BoyzUp to two Nobs in a unit, and the Nob has 3 Wounds. Shootas gain Lethal Hits against anything that isn’t a Monster or Vehicle.
Nobz5–10 Nobs with no separate Boss Nob, 3 Wounds each, and the new Kustom Krumpa. Paired Krumpas is a proper 5-point upgrade — it was going in free.
TankbustasThe Nob has his own profile at 3 Wounds, and their rokkits have Hunter modes that only fire at Monsters and Vehicles.
Killa KansFaster and tougher — M 8″, T 7 — with their weapons consolidated into one Kan Blasta with three modes.
StompaInvulnerable save is 5+, not 6+.
What we still can’t show you. The other 44 Ork datasheets still carry last edition’s profiles, and the new detachment rules and stratagems are in the codex — Games Workshop withdrew the free Ork faction pack when it launched, so there is no longer a free source we can restate them from. Those detachments show their points and enhancements and send you to your codex for the rule itself. Five units are priced in the manual with no datasheet to build at all: Gunwagon, Nazdreg, Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies, Runtherd and Wartrakks. All of it lands as soon as the rules data catches up, which we now check every week.

Rules changes that affect every army

August’s Universal Rules Updates reached our data on 1 September. The headline one changes a thing most armies do every game.

Disembark and charge is now two named moves

The old wording — “counts as having made a Normal move, and is still eligible to declare a charge” — has been replaced by two defined moves, assault disembark and shock disembark. Both set up 3″ from the transport; the difference is that an assault disembark is barred if the transport Advanced or Fell Back this phase, and a shock disembark is not. Every Assault Ramp, Assault Vehicle, Rapid Deployment and Aerial Assault ability now points at one of them, along with 15 stratagems and 6 enhancements.

Changes worth knowing

  • Adepta Sororitas — Acts of Faith now generates Miracle dice at the start of each turn, not each battle round. That is double the dice.
  • Death Guard — Nurgle’s Gift now also gives enemies the benefit of cover against the bearer’s ranged attacks, on top of the melee penalty.
  • Astra Militarum — Recon Element was rewritten from a cover-and-save rule for Walkers and Regiment units into Stealth for every Astra Militarum unit, and dropped from 3 to 2 Detachment Points.
  • Imperial Knights — Gate Warden Lance now uses a 40mm foundation marker, measured from any part rather than the closest part.
  • Space Wolves — Veterans of the Fang splits a unit into two as-equal halves rather than two units of five.
  • The Frame keyword was removed from 48 aircraft and land speeders.

Six new official answers

  • A rule that changes an attack’s Damage to 0 applies after save rolls.
  • Improved critical hits do not apply when snap shooting — still only on a 6.
  • Models waiting on a Fight On Death ability stay on the battlefield for every rules purpose: measurable, visible, targetable, and still engaging your opponent.
  • Outside the core rules, “objective marker” means “objective”.
  • Embarked units keep their abilities, but count as not on the battlefield — so anything needing visibility or measurement does nothing.
  • When both players have Scouts, pre-battle moves alternate, starting with whoever has the first turn.

Fixes in the app

  • Support Characters attach properly. 54 datasheets were being offered as Group Leaders when they are Support Characters — Lieutenants, Ancients, Apothecaries, every Wolf Guard Pack Leader and all four Necron crypteks among them — which stopped them stacking alongside a Leader.
  • War Horde shows both its Force Dispositions. It is Take and Hold and Purge the Foe; the app was only showing the first.
  • Enhancements that name their bearer now say so. Where the manual prints a lock — Kill Kommanda is for a character leading Kommandos — the app now offers it to exactly those.
  • Four Imperial Agents and Genestealer Cults detachments recovered their Detachment Points and Force Disposition, which had gone missing over a punctuation difference between our two sources.
