Detachments that hand out keywords

Five detachments let you nominate units as Characters when you muster your army. The app now reads that rule, so those units can take an Enhancement and be your Warlord — which, in some armies, was the only legal way to build a list at all.

Nominating units as Characters

A detachment’s rules can end with a Keywords block that gives units a keyword their own datasheet does not print. Chaos Knights’ Houndpack Lance is the clearest case: every War Dog becomes Battleline, and when you muster your army you select three War Dog units, which then have the Character keyword for the battle. Games Workshop’s own note under the rule spells out why that matters — the selected units can be given Enhancements, and one of them can be your Warlord.

The app was not reading any of that. A Chaos Knights player building 1,000 points under Houndpack Lance was offered the detachment’s four Enhancements, and then told the War Dog holding one could not take Enhancements, because no War Dog datasheet prints Character. There was no way to build a legal list.

In the Battle Forge, War Dogs under Houndpack Lance now appear where the rule puts them: under Battleline, and under Characters as a nomination — add one from there and it is nominated for you, ready for an Enhancement or the Warlord. Any qualifying unit also has a Muster Armies section above its Enhancements, to nominate it or withdraw the nomination, with how many of your picks you have used. The list checker counts them: nominate a fourth War Dog and it says so, and a War Dog given an Enhancement without a nomination is told to take one.

The detachments this unlocks

DetachmentWhat you may nominate
Houndpack Lance — Chaos KnightsThree War Dog units. They are also all Battleline, which doubles how many of each you may take.
Solar Spearhead — Adeptus CustodesUp to two Adeptus Custodes Walker models.
Steel Hammer — Astra MilitarumOne or more Astra Militarum Titanic units — the rule prints no cap.
Headhunter Task Force — Space MarinesUp to three Tank Ace units. The same detachment is what makes your vehicles Tank Aces in the first place, so both halves of the rule are now read.
Subterranean Assault — TyranidsUp to two Trygon models. Mawlocs and Trygons are also Burrowers under the same block.

Two more detachments grant keywords without a choice attached, and those now apply on their own: World Eaters’ Cult of Blood makes Jakhals and Goremongers Battleline, and Thousand Sons’ Warpmeld Pact does the same for Tzaangors — which doubles their duplicate limit, so lists that were legal on the table were being marked illegal in the app.

What we still can’t read. Three keyword grants are left alone rather than guessed at, because their wording turns on something we cannot check from keywords: Armoured Speartip’s Heavy Transport (a Wounds characteristic of 14+), Armoured Infantry’s Armoured Skirmisher (an exclusion written the same way), and The Lost Brethren’s Battleline grant for Death Company Marines, whose datasheets sit in the Blood Angels list rather than the one the rule is filed under. A grant applied too widely would hand Enhancements to models the rule never offered them to, which you would only discover at the table.

Fixes in the app

  • Paragon Warsuits: the Superior gets the war mace and the grenade launcher. Both swaps read “any number of models”, so all three models may take them — but the weapons are named “Paragon war blade” and “Paragon storm bolters”, and the app was matching that word against the unit’s two Paragons and quietly capping the swap at two models. The Paragon Superior could take neither.
  • The same mis-reading affected eight other units. Reiver Squads (in every chapter) can now give the Sergeant a grav-chute, Bullgryn Squads can arm the Bone ’ead, and Tzaangors can arm the Twistbray — each one an option the datasheet offers to every model in the unit.
  • Duplicate limits follow granted Battleline. A unit that is Battleline only because of your detachment now gets the doubled limit it is entitled to.
