StarCraft Wave 3 and the October balance patch

This morning Archon Studio added StarCraft: Tabletop Miniatures Game Wave 3 to its official army builder, along with a balance patch for all three races. Both are in Warp Nexus today: fourteen new units, seven new Faction and Tactical Cards, and new prices for most of the armies you’ve already built. There’s also a fix for the app saved to an iPhone home screen, which was sitting under the status bar and the home indicator.

Wave 3

Every new unit and card is in the Warhost and the StarCraft Codex, with the same tappable keyword help as the rest.

  • Terran: Nova, in Assault Mode (260 Minerals) or Stealth Mode (240), the Raven (170) and the Spec Ops Marauder (230). Nova’s Holo Decoy, the Raven’s Auto-Turret and the Sabotage Drone come into play through abilities, so they’re in the Codex but not on the list.
  • Zerg: Zagara (250), the Defiler (130), the Bile Launcher (150) and Vilelings (180 for eighteen).
  • Protoss: Tassadar (230), High Templar (130 for two, 230 for four) and the Twilight Templar (230).
  • New Faction Cards: Nova Covert Ops, Zagara’s Swarm and Templar Caste. Each unlocks its own units: the Spec Ops Marauder, Vilelings and the Twilight Templar.
  • New Tactical Cards: Vanadium Plating (Terran), Defiler Mound (Zerg), Templar Archives (Protoss), and Reactive Creep, a Creep Card for Zagara’s Swarm.

Nova’s two modes are one unit: an army can take one or the other, never both. The Warhost won’t offer the second once the first is in.

The balance patch

The patch makes Stimpack Terrans, Raynor and Artanis cost more, and makes much of the Zerg roster cheaper, because Zerg had been falling behind. Every change it lists is in the app:

  • Terran: Marines 170/220 (were 160/210), Marauders 160/290 (150/280) with Veteran of Tarsonis 20/40, Medics 120 (110) with Stabilizer Medpacks down to 20, the Goliath 180 (190) and Jim Raynor 280 (250). Barracks 30 Gas, Barracks (Tech Lab) 40, Academy 40, Dropship 35.
  • Zerg: Zerglings 150/210 (180/220), Raptors 210/260 (240/300), Kerrigan Swarm Raptors 230 (250), Swarmlings 210 (260), the Queen 140 (150), the Vile 190 (200) and the Corpser 220 (240). Glial Reconstitution is 10 on every Roach, and the Hydralisk’s upgrades are cheaper on four models. Spawning Pool (Six Pool) 35 Gas, Hydralisk Den 30, Evolution Chamber 25.
  • Protoss: Zealots 170 (160), Adepts 160 (150), the Praetor Guard 260 (280), Stalkers 160 for one (170) and Artanis 270 (250). The Sentry’s Solid-Field Projectors and Hallucination are 10 cheaper. Nexus 40 Gas, Twilight Council 40.

The official builder also gives the Raynor’s Raiders Faction Card one Air slot, which the patch notes don’t mention. Warp Nexus follows the builder.

Your saved armies use the new prices straight away, so a list built right up to its limit may now be over its Minerals or Gas. The Warhost flags it, and dropping an upgrade or a Tactical Card usually fixes it.

Checked against the official builder

We compared all 45 units and 49 cards with the official builder field by field: sizes, Minerals, Supply, every upgrade price, stats, tags, weapon profiles, Gas, slots and faction tags, and every number matches. Ability and card text is still written in our own words; the official cards and rulebook have the full wording.

More room on the home screen

If you’ve added Warp Nexus to an iPhone home screen, the top of the app was drawing under the clock and battery, and the tab bar was sitting under the home indicator. The app now leaves room for both.
